ENDORSEMENT PLATFORM FOR THE
STOP EXXONMOBIL CAMPAIGN
******
Greenpeace, together with Friends of the Earth, U.S. Public Interest Research
Group (PIRG) and other grassroots groups, are launching a campaign to
stop ExxonMobil from obstructing progress on fighting global warming.
ExxonMobil, America's largest petroleum company, is one of the largest
obstructionists to solve global warming by denying that global warming
is a even problem and that the burning of fossil fuels is the major cause.
ExxonMobil has long had a reputation as a major corporate polluter, infamous
for the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound in 1989, where
10.8 million gallons of oil were spilled. The Campaign to Stop ExxonMobil
will expose ExxonMobil for its obstructionist positions and for its role
in preventing real action by the Bush Administration to stop global warming.
The public campaign will build pressure on the company to support international
and national action to solve global warming.
Here are some of the facts about ExxonMobil
- ExxonMobil aims to convince the public that working to stop global
warming and the international climate treaty, the Kyoto Protocol, is
a bad idea. ExxonMobil has invested millions to convince the public
that the Kyoto Protocol is "unrealistic and economically damaging."
ExxonMobil hopes to convince the public that conservation is un-American.
Through its extreme propaganda efforts and their political lobbying,
ExxonMobil has successfully stopped the U.S. government from making
progress on climate change issues.
- ExxonMobil denies that there is a clear link between their business
and global warming. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,
comprised of over 2,000 of the world's most prominent scientists, has
consistently confirmed that fossil fuels such as oil are the major cause
of global warming. This panel predicts the current impacts of global
warming, such as drought, extreme weather and rising sea level, will
increasingly put the lives of millions of people at risk. More than
160 governments agree with the findings of this panel. Lee Raymond,
CEO of ExxonMobil, has stated that "we do not now have sufficient
scientific understanding of climate change to make reasonable predictions
and/or justify drastic measures
Some reports in the media link
climate change to extreme weather and harm to human health. Yet experts
see no such pattern." Lee Raymond's opinion has influenced the
Bush Administration failure to tackle global warming as a real problem.
- ExxonMobil has no desire to explore renewable energy as a viable source
of power. CEO Lee Raymond has said, "with no readily available
economic alternatives on the horizon, fossil fuels will continue to
supply most of the world's energy needs for the foreseeable future."
In 2000 alone, ExxonMobil made $17.7 billion in profit worldwide- the
largest profit for any company in the world. This year, ExxonMobil is
set to spend more than $7 billion on oil and gas exploration, and not
one cent on renewable energy or green fuels.
